Liebestreu Op. 3 No. 1 by Johannes Brahms. High Voice and Piano. German. Advanced. MCL158a

Opus 3 is Brahms' first published collection of songs. It appeared in 1853 at the publisher Breitkopf & Härtel under the title 'Sechs Gesänge für eine Tenoroder Sopranstimme mit Pianofortebegleitung'. At only 20 years old, the young composer is already revealing his talent for vocal writing and poem setting. Schumann himself was very enthusiastic about the collection: "There are songs whose poetry would be obvious even if we did not know the lyrics, because a deep melodious song goes through them". 'Liebestreu' is a masterpiece worthy of the greatest composers of the genre. The lied is written in a varied three-part strophic form on a poem by Robert Reinick. Her text is a dialogue between a mother and her child, alternating despair and hope on the theme of maternal love. A good performance of this song requires the contrasted interpretation of these two characters. The piano accompaniment chords creates a stir throughout the piece on a bass pattern very serious that reaffirms each intervention of the mother. This publication was developed from the original edition revised and corrected in 1926 by Eusebius Mandyczewski.
