These five masterpieces from the last period of Gustav Mahler reveal his full sensitivity to Rückertian poetry. The first four songs of the collection, including the sublime "Ich bin der Welt Abhanden Gekommen", were composed during the summer of 1901, a few months after the composer had recovered from a serious illness. The famous "Liebst du um Schönheit", written a year later, was offered to his young wife Alma as a reconciliation following extramarital affairs. Each song was originally written in two versions; one for voice and orchestra, the other with piano accompaniment. This publication for voice and piano was created from the original Kahnt Nachfolger edition, 1905.
