Schumann was 17 years old when he made his first attempts at composition in the field of lied. At that time, his sketches were experimental and it is only ten years later that he will assert his compositional talents. The year 1840 saw the birth of his most important masterpieces with the cycles Myrthen op. 25, written on poems by Goethe, Rückert and Heine among others; Liederkreis op. 39 on poems by Eichendorff; the famous Dichterliebe op. 48 (MCL78a) and Frauenliebe und Leben op. 42 (MCL79a). Many other collections will also be published that same year. Schumann became at that time the most famous lieder composer before his contemporaries Mendelssohn and Liszt. He will compose in total some 250 works for voice with piano accompaniment. This album has been carefully prepared from the original sources and contains a selection of lieder among the most known and appreciated.
