how can i make playing bass in jazz band more fun?...?
i Play Bass in jazz band and most of the time i just play walking bass lines or one or two notes at and annoying rhythmic pattern i love playing bass just i want it to be a little more fun
Something here is wrong. Jazz bass is on of the most dynamic instruments in the band, therefore you almost never play the same song the same way. Each time should be a different approach to outlining the chords. You are basically improvising and emphasizing the chord tones (which is easier than it sounds). The remedy to your situation is to experiment. Listen to covers or the original song that you guys are playing and copy it. Learn some licks and input that into your arsenal come class time. You'll definitely have a different experience, as well as turn some heads. You work on your arsenal and learn more theory and apply that, there's no way you should get bored because each play is a learning experience.
I kinda envy the rhythm section in Big Band, they have much more freedom than the wind players. We are limited to interpreting the specific lines we are give, yet you guys have chord progressions with mandatory lines sprinkled about. Dude enjoy yourself let loose and let jazz happen. Music is an emotional art form, and if you're not in it, then audience can tell especially if musicians are in it.
