Why learn guitar chords? how many chord do you need to learn?
I don't get why learning chord will let me play a song? Cause i mean isn't it like learning to play by ear? Also what are the step to learn to play guitar without taking lesson. So far i can read tab and play them. Now i wanna know do i just keep on playing new songs ? what are scale and chord for ?
OK, your question was a little confusing (the whole learning to play by ear, what?). Chords and scales are actually the most important part of learning to play. There are literally thousands of chords and not all of them are necessary. You need to know A B C D E F G and their minors as well. Once you have those down, you need to learn 7th and 9th chords. Those are the most basic chords you need to know. It's not as much work as it seems. There are several different voicings for all chords, but you can worry about that some other time. The 7th and 9th chords will be easy since they can be moved up and down the fretboard with the same fingering. Scales are important because they determine which chords should be played, which notes should be hit and basically everything else that makes sense out of music. Start with the major scale. Once you have that down, learn the minor (which should be easy since it's the same fingering as the major, you just start in a different spot). Then the pentatonic, which is an easy five note scale. Once you've learned these things, you will realize they are used in all the songs you have already learned and will learn. It will make learning new material much easier. I hope this helps. Edit: Keep learning to play new songs that you enjoy. Although you must learn the scales and chords to know why the song you are learning works the way it does. Every note or chord in the songs you know are being played for a reason. Every Guitar Solo you have or ever will hear is consisted of all the notes in a certain scale. When learning a scale, don't think about what note is what, it's more about shapes. Learning where the notes are will just come. Good luck.
