What were the major factors for the spread of Judaism and what where the challenges in getting it started?
Jewish migration as a result of the initial Babylonian Exile. Many Hebrews fled to Egypt, while others were brought to the Babylonian Empire to work in the great cities there.
After that exile, large numbers of the Hebrews now called Jews remained in the Babylonian and Egyptian territories. This allowed them to share their faith with others.
With the hellenization of the Near East, the Greek propensity to both insinuate their own culture as well as adopt others further gave spread of Jewish beliefs and ideals. By the time of Julius Caesar, the Jewish and Roman leadership were well-connected, and many Jews who had been raised in Hellenized communities were now moving throughout the Empire.
When the Temple was destroyed in 70 AD the Jews living outside the region became more important to those who fled, seeking their cousins to help them, support them and give them and their children aid. As such, Jewish communities began to exist in cities across ancient Europe and North Africa.
that's the basic history. Since then they've lived all over the world, been persecuted, but continued to exist and even thrive in some communities.
Today they have their country back, but many Jews still consider themselves exiles, looking at the Secular state of Israel as a sad, hollow attempt to rebuild the Jewish Nation.
