Any way to prevent chili peppers from causing stomach problems?

My girlfriend recently moved to China. Although we previously ate lots of spicy foods in the U.S., she has found that the small red chili peppers in many Chinese foods (especially Hunan food) consistently give her stomach problems-- even though she loves eating it. The Sichuan pepper corn does not have this effect.

Mexicans can eat hot chilis, they have been known to drink milk or eat other dairy products to counter-act the heat. I would advise not drinking raw milk as the chili spice can interact with natural milk enzymes resulting in painful gas and cramps. If you go to an Indian restaurant, they usually have a container of raita, a yogurt salad, that is very good for cutting the heat. I always get a small bowl of it before I eat a bite of anything and have it just in case I start burning. I had heartburn problems many months, and found out that taking a spoonful of real honey in a cup of warm water and drinking it took the burning away quickly.
